Hiking or mountain biking in our mountains often means sharing the trails with grazing livestock protected by livestock guardian dogs. Although their size and barking can seem intimidating, Patous are there for one very specific reason: protecting the flock from predators.

Today, these dogs are an integral part of mountain pastoral life. To ensure that hikers, mountain bikers, shepherds and livestock can safely share these natural spaces, it is important to adopt a few simple good practices.
So, what should you do if a Patou approaches you? Why does it bark? And how should you react if you are hiking with your own dog? Here’s everything you need to know. <\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

The term Patou is commonly used to describe the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, the large white dog frequently seen alongside sheep flocks. However, not all livestock guardian dogs are Patous. Many different guardian breeds are used around the world, including the Maremma Sheepdog, the Kangal, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog, the Transmontano Mastiff and the Spanish Mastiff. <\/div>

Unlike a herding dog, which works alongside the shepherd to move and gather livestock, a livestock guardian dog lives permanently with the flock<\/b> and works independently. From an early age, it develops a strong bond with the animals it protects and comes to regard the flock as its own family. <\/div>
<\/div>
Its role is primarily one of deterrence. Day and night, it watches over the surrounding area to protect livestock from potential predators, particularly wolves. Whenever something unfamiliar enters the area it is guarding, the dog becomes alert. It may bark, approach quickly and position itself between the flock and what it considers to be a potential threat. <\/div>

A Patou approaching you while barking is therefore not behaving like a pet dog\u2014it is simply carrying out the job it has been trained to do.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The first rule is simple: do not surprise the dog, do not try to frighten it, and remain calm.<\/div>
As soon as you spot a flock, make your presence known by speaking clearly\u2014for example, with a simple “Hello, dog!” Whenever possible, give the flock a wide berth, even if this means temporarily leaving the marked trail, provided you can do so safely. <\/div>
If the dog approaches you:<\/div>
  • Stop, or continue walking very slowly without heading directly towards it.<\/div><\/li>
  • Speak calmly so the dog can identify your presence.<\/div><\/li>
  • Avoid making direct eye contact.<\/div><\/li>
  • Give the dog time to assess the situation.<\/div><\/li>
  • Keep a safe distance from the flock.<\/div><\/li>
  • Avoid sudden movements.<\/div><\/li><\/ul>
    If you’re carrying hiking poles, hold them together in one hand with the tips pointing downwards alongside your body. Never raise or point them towards the dog, as this may be interpreted as a threat. <\/div>
    If you’re riding a mountain bike, get off as early as possible and continue on foot while pushing your bike. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you may keep the bike between yourself and the dog, but do not use it to push or threaten the animal. <\/div>
    Once the dog has identified you and no longer considers you a threat, it will usually calm down and return to its flock. You can then continue on your way while keeping a respectful distance. <\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

    Because we are used to pet dogs, we may instinctively behave in ways that are inappropriate around a livestock guardian dog. Remember that a Patou is working and makes its own decisions according to the situation. <\/div>
    When facing a livestock guardian dog, you should never:<\/div>
    Run away or try to flee. Stay calm and avoid sudden movements.<\/b> Shout at the dog or threaten it. Never wave your arms, hiking poles or any other object towards it.<\/div>
    Stare directly into its eyes.<\/b> Keep it within your field of vision without maintaining eye contact.<\/div>

    Having a pet dog with you can make encounters with livestock guardian dogs more challenging. From the guardian dog’s perspective, it is not always easy to distinguish a domestic dog from a potential threat to the flock, especially if your dog is excited or barking. <\/div>
    If you know your route passes through mountain pastures where flocks are protected by livestock guardian dogs, the safest option, whenever possible, is to choose a different route when hiking with your dog.<\/b><\/div>
    When approaching a flock, keep your dog on a leash and close to you to prevent it from approaching the animals and triggering a response from the guardian dogs.<\/div>
    If, despite these precautions, a direct confrontation occurs between your dog and a livestock guardian dog, release the leash\u2014or, if that is not possible, give it as much slack as you can. Holding your dog tightly or pulling on the leash in an attempt to protect it may interfere with the dogs’ natural interactions and could place you in the middle of the conflict. <\/div>
    Even if you have a small dog, do not pick it up. By physically placing yourself between the dogs, you could put yourself at serious risk. <\/div>
    The best approach is always to anticipate the situation: stay aware of your surroundings, spot flocks from a distance, and give them a wide berth whenever possible.<\/div>
