Cabrettes de Villarembert

Villarembert

The "cabrettes" are wooden vestiges that used to be used to run the hay ropes down the hay bales. They date from the 19th century.

Description

The “Cabrettes d’embarquement”—devices developed by farmers shortly after World War II—were used to lower bales of hay, secured to an 850-meter-long steel cable, 1.4 centimeters thick, which was unrolled from the village down the slope to the respective mountain pastures.
Three men, working their way across the steep mountain slopes, pulled this cable using a wooden bar threaded through a ring and secured to the end of the rope. At first, they advanced 1.50 meters with each pull; later, the work became so arduous that they could only advance 10 to 15 cm at a time. *
Traces of these cable tracks are still visible above Les Fromentières and below the equestrian center.
