Église Notre-Dame

Used since the early 20th century as a hangar, festival hall or billeting place for troops on maneuvers, Notre-Dame church in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne has been undergoing a major restoration campaign since 2020 to prevent it from collapsing.

Listed as a Monument Historique, Notre-Dame de Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne still boasts a beautiful Romanesque portal with double voussoirs and gypsum columns, and capitals depicting plants and historical figures from the Middle Ages.

Not far away, the former 11th-century donjon capitulaire, restored in the 20th century, was originally the keep of the Notre-Dame church. Its destruction by French revolutionary troops at the end of the 18th century led to its separation from the church.

Its last known use dates back to the 1960s, since when it has been abandoned. The town of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne has launched a last-ditch effort to save this historic building. Restoration of the building will be completed in 2023.
